The goal of public health is to maintain the health of people in a community. Public health agencies do this by:
- Preventing and managing the spread of disease
- Ensuring environmental safety
- Inspecting and licensing businesses
- Collecting health statistics
- Delivering disaster assistance
- Providing support services for healthcare workers
Public Health Services (PHS), a division of the Department of Health and Human Services, is responsible for public health at the federal level. PHS supports state and local public health agencies. All states and many communities have health departments as well.
Public health administrators usually have at least a master’s degree. Specialists may have a master’s degree in areas such as public health nursing, epidemiology, or environmental health. In business functions, administrators may have master’s degrees in public administration, business administration, or related areas. Physicians also work as administrators in public health agencies.
