Surgical Technologists are members of operating room teams. They work mainly in hospitals, but some find employment at other facilities that perform out-patient surgery as well. Some of a surgical technologist’s duties are:
- Readying the operating room
- Transporting patients and preparing them for surgery
- Preparing and checking equipment
- Observing vital signs
- Passing and holding instruments during surgery
- Helping to prepare specimens and apply dressings
- Cleaning the operating room
Some surgical technologists advance by specializing in particular types of surgery.
Training programs for surgical technologists range from 9 to 24 months in length, and are offered by community colleges, junior colleges, vocational schools, hospitals, universities, and the military. The Liaison Council on Certification for the Surgical Technologist offers certification, a voluntary credential that many employers prefer.
