How to Become a Customer Service Representative

A Customer Service Representative (CSR) is in direct contact with customers, either individual consumers or companies. A customer service representative's specific job responsibilities and goals depends on the type of business the company operates, but duties usually include answering questions, addressing customer concerns or complaints, and making sure that customers are satisfied.

A customer service representative communicates with customers by phone, email, regular mail, fax, or in person. Call Center workers use computers to enter and retrieve data pertaining to customer accounts and inquiries.

Education Requirements

Most companies require their CSRs to have high school diplomas. They provide customer service representative job training as well. Patience and good communication skills are critical.

Employment Outlook

Job prospects for customer service representatives are excellent. The median 2004 annual salary for customer service representatives was $27,000.
