Office Managers and other administrative support supervisors work in all types of businesses. In addition to keeping the office running smoothly, office managers may supervise employees who report to them, whether those employees are bank tellers, customer service staff, or clerical workers.

Office Managers' duties include:

  • Organizing and supervising administrative operations to ensure that the office runs efficiently
  • Interviewing, orienting, and training new administrative employees
  • Planning the work of administrative staff members
  • Ensuring that work is on schedule and meets quality standards
  • Evaluating workers' performance
  • Ordering supplies
  • Arranging for maintenance and repair of equipment

Many businesses fill office manager positions by promoting workers from within the organization, and some companies use office management positions as entry-level jobs for recent college graduates who hope to move on to higher management positions. Earning an associate or bachelor's degree in business or administrative services will likely boost your eligibility for promotions and your pay.
