Art, Design, and Media Careers

Creative people want to do what they love! In fact, many artists, artisans, filmmakers, and musicians do what they do, no matter what they earn, because they could not do anything else.

Artists and designers can also find commercial work as freelancers or as employees of a business. If you want commercial employment to support you while you work on your own creations, a great portfolio of your art will help you get in the door--along with a proven ability to "think outside the box."

In the past, many people entered art and design careers without college degrees, but that's changing. Commercial and industrial designers must almost always have a bachelor's or master's degree to break into the field. Educational requirements for artisans and craftspeople are more flexible. In the competitive fields of fashion and interior design, a college education may give you the edge you need.
