Computer Service Technicians -- also known as Computer Support Specialists or Computer Repair Specialists -- repair, maintain, and install computers and peripheral computer equipment. They use diagnostic software, electronic instruments, and hand tools to do their work. Since computers are now found in every sector of modern life, employers of computer technicians include everyone from schools and universities to corporations to government to retail computer stores. Some computer technicians are self-employed or work for independent service providers. They may also work as field technicians who travel to customer locations or as bench technicians who work in retailers.
Some computer technicians are also trained in network installation and maintenance. The additional expertise may qualify the technician as a Network Support Specialist or System Administrator. A number of technology developers offer certification in their own systems and networking hardware; for example, Cisco, which makes switches, routers, modems, offers several certifications that can make you a valuable asset to an employer.
Salaries for computer service technicians range from $24,190 to $69,110, with median annual earnings around $40,430. Salaries for network technicians are higher.
You can train to be a computer technician in an associate degree or professional certification program through a technical career or vocational school, military training, or a manufacturer's training program. You'll maximize your job opportunities by becoming trained and certified in as many operating systems and network technologies as you can.
