Cosmetologists -- hair stylists, nail technicians, and aestheticians -- help people to look their best. Along with a sense of style, you must have good people skills to be successful in cosmetology.
Most personal appearance workers work in beauty salons or barbershops, and about half are self-employed. Job opportunities are good, although there is more competition at high-end salons. A particular benefit for employees with families is that work schedules tend to be flexible.
All states require licenses for most beauty services workers, and cosmetologists who hold licenses for more than one service have the best employment prospects. If you enjoy the work and decide you'd like to run your own cosmetology business, management skills will be essential.
