The term HVACR (or HVAC-R) refers to the related fields of heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration. HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) technicians install and maintain the equipment that controls temperature, humidity, and air quality in buildings. Those who work in commercial refrigeration specialize in the transportation and storage of food and medicine. HVACR technicians often choose to specialize in just one of these areas. They may also work exclusively in installation or maintenance and repair.
Installing a new heating, air conditioning, or refrigeration system involves the following general steps:
- Following blueprints or other specifications
- Installing equipment
- Placing supply lines, ductwork, and other components
- Connecting electrical wiring and controls
- Testing and adjusting the system
Technical school training and apprenticeships are increasingly important because heating, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems have become more complex. Secondary and postsecondary programs are usually six months to two years in length.
To develop a solid level of competency, program graduates typically need an additional six months to two years of on-the-job experience after they complete their training. Apprenticeships, often run by trade unions, are another way to train. These programs combine three to five years of work with classroom instruction.
During training, HVACR workers take a series of exams to obtain various types of certification. Certification demonstrates competence and is important to employers. Also, air conditioning and refrigeration technicians handle certain refrigerants that are dangerous to the environment. They must be certified to work with these materials by an organization approved by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
When researching training programs, look for those that have been accredited by HVAC Excellence, The National Center for standards for HVACR programs, or the Partnership for Air Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Accreditation (PHARA).
The median hourly wage in 2004 for HVACR technicians was $17.43. The job opportunities in these areas are excellent.
