Skilled Trades and Vocational Training
"Learning on the job" is the 21st-century equivalent of apprenticeship in a skilled trade, but today's tradesmen also benefit from earning industry credentials through career training at an accredited trade school.
Some trades are always in high demand. Not surprisingly, these trades are often highly paid. One advantage of working in a skilled trade is the opportunity to work on your own schedule and be your own boss. If the 9-to-5 office idea doesn't appeal to you and you don't mind being paged for the occasional holiday emergency, you may enjoy the independence that comes with a career in a skilled trade.
