How to Become an Information Systems Manager

Computer and information systems managers combine expertise in business and technology to direct the computer-related activities of their organizations. They supervise systems analysts, computer programmers, systems administrators, and other computer professionals. Because information systems are at the core of most businesses' operations, some information systems managers have top executive status in their organizations.

These are some information systems manager positions:

  • Chief information officer (CIO)
The chief information officer is one of a company's top executives. CIOs are the visionaries who determine the overall direction of their organizations' information systems. They're also responsible for budgeting projects and programs, hiring staff, and directing information technology activities.
  • Chief technology officer (CTO)
Chief technology officers often report to the CIOs of their companies. The CTO is responsible for evaluating new technologies and determining how they can benefit their organizations. They develop strategies for implementing new IT developments, and justify their recommendations to upper management.
  • Management information systems (MIS) director
The MIS director, or director of information technology, may also report to the CIO. These managers oversee the computer resources of organizations and direct the work of information technology workers. They're responsible for data security, IT services, systems availability and continuity, and technology upgrades.
  • IT project manager
IT project managers assemble and direct teams to work on information technology projects, such as developing a software application or upgrading an information system. They work with computer specialists, vendors, consultants, and internal and external clients. Along with directing the project team, the project manager is responsible for identifying requirements, budgeting, and scheduling.

Degree Programs and Training for the Information Systems Manager Career

Information technology managers usually hold bachelor's degrees, but an MBA with an information technology concentration is ideal. Management information systems (MIS) degrees also combine technical coursework with business knowledge.

Information Systems Manager Career Certification and Licensing

No particular certification is required for IT managers. However, IT project managers often seek project management certifications. Technical certifications offered by vendors and professional organizations may also be helpful.

Information Systems Managers' Earnings

The middle 50% of computer and information systems managers earned between $79,000 and $129,000 in 2006.

Information Systems Managers' Employment Outlook

Employment for computer and information systems managers is growing faster than most occupations. Job opportunities are excellent, and the best opportunities go to candidates with good business knowledge and communications skills.
