Fitness Specialists include exercise instructors, fitness rehabilitators, personal trainers, and managers of exercise facilities. A Fitness Specialist's goal is to help others increase their fitness levels by instructing and motivating them in a variety of activities. Fitness specialists work in hosptials, rehabilitation clinincs, gyms, health clubs, and clients' homes.

These are some roles played by fitness specialists:

  • Health and Wellness Consultant: Work with dieticians, rehabilitative therapists, and medical staff to rehabilitate patients with weight and other medical problems toward a healthy physique, cardiac system, and lifestyle.
  • Personal Trainers: Work individually with clients, at fitness facilities or at home, to help them assess and reach personal fitness goals.
  • Exercise Instructors: Lead group classes at gyms and health clubs.
  • Fitness Directors: Direct fitness programs, supervise workers, and perform administrative duties at gyms or health clubs.

Fitness specialists often get their start as exercise program participants. Rehabilitative fitness specialists and personal trainers must be certified, but requirements for exercise instructors vary. Some organizations, such as the Pilates Method Alliance and the Yoga Alliance have established standards for training in the various disciplines. Increasingly, employers require bachelor's degrees in exercise science or physical education.
