In the coming years, the baby boomer generation will retire, resulting in an elderly population with a new freedom to enjoy life without the burden of working. Making the transition into retirement can also come with some mental and emotional strain, creating a need for a variety of human service support workers to provide assistance to the retirees and their families.

The field that deals with providing elderly care is often called Gerontology or geriatric services.

Here are some geriatric services careers:

  • Geriatric Psychologists
  • Geriatric psychologists specialize in the mental health care issues particular to senior citizens.

  • Geriatric Counselors
  • Geriatric counselors provide services to older people who are coping with changes due to aging as well as their family members.

  • Geriatric Social Workers
  • Geriatric social workers advise the elderly about housing, transportation, and long-term care. They may also run support groups for family caregivers.

  • Geriatric Home Health Aides
  • Geriatric home health aides help the elderly with personal care. They assist the elderly with routine, non-medical personal care. They also perform health-related services such as administering oral medications and checking pulse rate.
