Adult literacy and remedial education programs are geared toward students over the age of 16. Adult literacy specialists teach all subjects, including math, history, reading, writing, and science. Adults whose education level is below the 8th grade attend Adult Basic Education (ABE) classes, and those at a higher level attend Adult Secondary Education (ASE) classes. Students in ASE are often working toward a General Education Development (GED) certificate.

Adult literacy teachers often work part-time. Nevertheless, many states require a bachelor's degree and teacher certification, especially in government-funded programs.

Based on 2004 data, as an adult literary teacher you can expect to earn between $10.57/Hr and up to more than $34.94/Hr, with a median earning potential of $18.74/Hr.
