Music adds drama to video games, and sound effects punctuate the action and cue the player for what's to come. A video game sound designer matches the game's audio track to the action by:

  • Composing music
  • Locating effects in sound libraries
  • Recording sounds
  • Editing sounds

A video game sound designer for multimedia often works as a freelancer, and may also receive a royalty on every video game sold. Many video game sound designers have a bachelor's degree in music; others may have training in both music and computer science. Knowledge of audio engineering and computers is important. If you loved being the A/V expert at your school, this job may be for you!

The annual salary range for a video game sound designer is similar to that of music composers: $45,000 to $70,000.
